Transitions
Definition:
A transition is the technique used to move from the end of one shot to the beginning of the next shot. Transitions perform the same role as punctuation in prose.
Uses:
Transitions are used to link a series of shots to create a film sequence. Depending on the transitions used, a different meaning may be created.
The examples, accessed via the navigation on the left-hand side of this page, illustrate the way a transition can effect meaning.
Each example depicts the same two shots as shown on this page, but with a different transition.
The scene on this page is as it appears in the film.
