Top lighting

Definition: 

The main light source in top lighting comes from above the character.

Uses:

Top lighting is used to remove shadows or create the sense of a well-lit or sunny day. 

When used without fill lighting it has the effect of isolating a character, or when it is allowed to cast deep shadows, it can create a sense of mystery and secrecy.

Within the appropriate context it may also suggest divine intervention.
