The screenplay
Definition:
A screenplay is a written text that breaks the story down into its composite scenes and sequences.
In its simplest form, the screenplay will deliver character dialogue, with some reference to location, mood and action.
In its most complete form, the screenplay will also deliver motivational notes for actors, directions regarding camera and lighting, sound, hair and make-up, and costume direction.
Role:
The screenplay is the working document from which the director, producer and crew will construct a film.
It will not normally be absolutely exact, leaving final details to come as input from principal cast (lead actors) and crew (producer, director, production design, director of photography).
