Music

Music track

Definition:

The music track contains all of the non-diegetic music in the film.

Uses:

Music is used primarily to enhance or establish a film's mood and tone. It may also signal impending plot movements and give insights into character's motivation and psychology. Music is a powerful technique for consolidating a sense of place and time within the narrative.

Genre, style, volume, pace, rhythm and continuity are all aspects that may need consideration when you are analysing the impact of a film's music track in adding layers of meaning.

Most music tracks are of one of the following types: a specifically commissioned score, a collection of pre-existing songs or instrumental tracks chosen to match the plot movement of the film, or a combination of both.

Film clip

Clip 1: The music in this clip is diegetic music. It is generated within the narrative by Beryl's piano playing.
Clip 2: The music in the clip is non-diegetic because its source is outside the narrative. It is setting the mood.
