Establishing shots

Definition:

An establishing shot is used at the beginning of a film or major sequence of shots to delineate the relations between characters, setting, props and space. 

An establishing shot can also be used as part of an establishing sequence that reveals the genre and hints at major aspects of theme and plot contained in the film. 

These sequences can vary greatly, from a single, standard long shot to a creatively complex series of shots, angles and camera movements.
