Editing

Definition:

Editing is simply the joining of one shot with another to create or manipulate meaning in film. 

While the idea is simple, the techniques of editing are numerous and the possibilities are unlimited. 

An editor, can enhance or disturb the narrative by manipulating both space and time by arranging shots in a particular way or by emphasising particular shades, shapes and patterns of light and dark. 

The majority of feature films today are edited so as to not disrupt the narrative flow. 

This is called continuity editing.
