Colours and Shadow

Film Clip
In this example shadows obscure the face of
David Helfgott and the reflection of a stoplight
casts a red glow across his reflection in the window.
The audience is given a clue that all is not right
with this character.

Colour

Definition:

Colour can be added in a number of ways through coloured mise en scene elements, such as props, costumes and set pieces, coloured filters on camera lenses and coloured lighting.

Uses:

Specific applications of colour may have a variety of purposes. These include:

  • establishing mood
  • creating a sense of physical or emotional temperature
  • highlighting specific elements of the mise en scene or plot
  • indicating a style or genre of film
  • symbolical use.

Filmmakers are constantly aware of the colours in their shots and work in close collaboration with the cinematographer to achieve a particular feel and look for every scene.

Shadow
