Colour
Definition:
Colour can be added in a number of ways through coloured mise en scene elements, such as props, costumes and set pieces, coloured filters on camera lenses and coloured lighting.
Uses:
Specific applications of colour may have a variety of purposes. These include:
- establishing mood
- creating a sense of physical or emotional temperature
- highlighting specific elements of the mise en scene or plot
- indicating a style or genre of film
- symbolical use.
Filmmakers are constantly aware of the colours in their shots and work in close collaboration with the cinematographer to achieve a particular feel and look for every scene.

Shadow
Definition:
Shadows are consciously managed by lighting technicians to achieve the director's artistic vision.
