Digital and Virtual Environments (DaVE) is an enterprise business based in Lennox Head NSW, that Dave Heggie started in 2005 to extend his expertise from the public education system to provide effective digital services and website design for clients and businesses throughout Australia.

DaVE has a team of enthusiastic and creative people dedicated to providing you with innovative answers to suit your design needs.

As well, continuing with its education expertise, Digital and Virtual Environments provides a multi pronged approach to the creation and delivery of websites, elearning, training or education programs via your intranet, the internet or other electronic means such as PDA, CD, DVD, MP3 players or mobile phones.

DaVE understands that every situation has unique needs. That's why DaVE will not try to fit your corporation, institution or other into a ready-made web site template but will work with you to design a custom web site perfected to suit your needs and requirements.

DaVE prefers to develop long term relationships with our clients, rather than selling them a web site and promptly forgetting they exist. DaVE can not only assist with the creation of your virtual environment but provide training for maintenance and expansion.

Some background info about Dave

Dave Heggie has been involved with the public education sector since 1973. This includes integrating ICT skills in Primary, Secondary and the Tertiary sector as well as Adult Education.
His initial involvement with integrating computers into school classroom activities dates to the early 1980s  utilising the first Microbee computer in a NSW DET classroom.

In 1997, Dave Heggie was appointed as the first NSW DET Secondary Computing Studies teacher and thence he began specialising in website design and learning through distance, utilising an ever increasing number of technologies. At this stage, Dave was integrating ICT skills for primary, secondary students and teachers. He also managed the school network with nearly 500 networked assets both on and off campus. He also has Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training and has experience in VET training both face to face and online.

From 2000 to 2005 Dave was seconded to work full time with NSW Distance Education establishing the innovative online presence for NSW DE and developing Interactivity Workshops for which he received the Award of Excellence to Public Education and Training in 2002. These were conducted in various locations across the state and were designed to upskill Distance Education teachers/executives in new technologies capable of supporting highly interactive pedagogy within Distance Education. During this time he provided extensive phone and online assistance for teachers encountering difficulties in using technology to produce and teach their distance lessons.

Quote from the award:

“Dave Heggie has a rare mixture of outstanding skills leading to the development of Information Technology (IT) confidence and IT competence in teachers and, the development of teams of teachers with mixed competencies to produce excellent on-line lessons and materials for use by teachers and students throughout NSW.

Dave's consistent concern for students' well-being and teachers' confidence has been demonstrated in his efforts both within his school at Southern Cross Distance Education Centre and throughout a network of 19 distance education centres and 22 access program schools throughout NSW.

In 2002, Dave was responsible for running high quality ICT workshops for teachers. He has taken these workshops to isolated areas such as Goodooga, Boggabilla and Broken Hill and has also provided upskilling forums for distance education teachers at Dubbo, Sydney, Queanbeyan and Port Macquarie."

Since 2001 Dave has been part of the core team which implemented, designed and created the NSW Digital Lessons internet site (formerly known as WEB WIZ) that:

  • Provides opportunities for teachers in the NSW Distance Education Network to collaborate in developing examples of interactive lessons and their support materials in all Key Learning Areas to enthuse Distance Education students to engage in and enhance their learning.
  • Removes the distance out of Distance Education through collaboratively creating and sharing comprehensive interactive teaching and learning materials to support and enhance lessons that address syllabus outcomes in all Key Learning Areas (KLA).

Since 2004 Dave has designed and administrated this site and it exponentially grew from 1500 to 16000 learning objects (lessons, ie websites).

Dave has designed and implemented virtual classrooms and other internet communication methods now used extensively across the NSW DE Directorate after an intensive investigation of technologies utilising low bandwidth.

Dave saw the need for an open portal for NSW Distance Education and he designed, created and managed the site.

In 2004 he received a Premier’s scholarship to investigate eLearning technology pedagogies of New Zealand and Canada. His report identified exemplary uses of technology that encouraged collaborative experiences and interactions for distance students encompassing both the real-time and asynchronous learning styles.

Dave Heggie has been at the forefront of web design, onlline communication and eLearning and has presented at conferences, symposiums and workshops in Australia and around the world, including the 2005 AADES (Australasian Association of Distance Education Schools) international conference in Sydney.

Since 2005 he has been operating as Digital and Virtual Environments.
